Definitions of Online Learning

As online learning has matured, it has become increasingly important that we develop widely shared understandings of key terms and phrases.  Standard definitions will help in the development of policies and standards by government agencies, institutions, and accrediting organizations.  They will also aid research, helping to ensure that comparable data is collected and that the results are useful to other institutions.

The Sloan Consortium is in a good position to help evolve shared definitions for the field.  To get us started, Frank Mayadas and Gary Miller have drafted statements that define variations on online learning at the course and program level.  We are posting these definitions here so that members can review and comment on the drafts--refining or, perhaps, revising them.  Then, the definitions and your comments will be shared with a small group of Sloan Consortium leaders and refined as standards to be used by the Consortium and shared with other organizations in the field.

The purpose of this group is to review, edit, modify and suggest new definitions that can become a standardized set of definitions used to define what Sloan-C works on.  People joining this group are invited to read, comment and provide guidance about definitions.  The proposed process for the work is:

  1. An original started document authored by Frank Mayadas and Gary Miller can be found under the "documents" tab.
  2. Each of the definitions supplied by Mayadas and Miller are copied into separate wikis (under "wiki" tab)
  3. Your task is to read the definitions and supply edits and comments that Mayadas and Miller will use for the final revision to be recommended for adoption by Sloan-C.
  4. You may edit the wikis without worry - all old edits are retained by the system; Mayadas and Miller may revert to any earlier edited version.

In addition, a glossary of terms has been prepared from JALN authors - these terms are found under the "definitions" tab.

The Definitions Group will be active through mid-November.  We look forward to your contributions to this discussion.
